M.O.D. Puts Kibosh on Uni-Mail’s Green Electricity Plans

Monday 14th December 2009

Uni-Mail has great hopes to become the first mailing house in the U.K. to generate all its electricity from renewable sources. After all, there can’t be many in the direct mail industry in our position with a natural resource like the wind on our site.

We have already spent several thousand pounds on feasibility for a medium scale wind turbine here. We have had a wind speed monitoring tower in place for over a year so we know we have the wind resource to provide all the electricity we need.

We already knew we had a fight on our hands with the planning authority, we were ready for that, but now the M.O.D. have put the brakes on our plans with an objection to our turbine on the basis that it would interfere with radar at R.A.F. Benson, five miles away.

We can’t fight the council and the M.O.D. concurrently so, sadly, it seems that we will have to wait for the planning legislation to move and for the latest developments in “stealth” technology to filter down to smaller turbines.

What do you think about this ?  Please let us know on the blog.
